Charles G. Stiptich

July 25th 1998-July 3rd 2022

Charles G. "Chuckie" Stipetich, a dedicated Marine and newly appointed police officer, tragically lost his life on July 3, 2022, at the age of 23. Chuckie's life was a testament to service, courage, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Born and raised in Blawnox, Pennsylvania, he was the beloved son of Charles P. Jr. and Deena L. Stipetich and a loving brother to Branden T. and Isabella Rose Stipetich. His spirit will forever be cherished by his maternal grandmother, Louise M. Hansen, his paternal grandparents, Charles Sr. and Florence Stipetich, and countless family members and friends.

From a young age, Chuckie demonstrated a strong sense of duty. He successfully completed the Allegheny County Camp Cadet program, setting the stage for his future in public service. A 2017 graduate of Fox Chapel High School, he fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a Marine. Serving as a Mortarman and Marksmanship Coach with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Chuckie exemplified the core values of honor, courage, and commitment.

After completing his military service in 2021, Chuckie pursued a career in law enforcement, graduating with Class 90 from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Police Academy. Just over a week before his untimely death, Chuckie began serving as a Municipal Police Officer in Oakdale, Allegheny County. His dedication to his new role was palpable, and he quickly earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community members.

On that fateful day, Chuckie's life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. While off-duty, Chuckie was involved in a tragic road rage incident that ended in front of his family home. The confrontation escalated when Kevin McSwiggen, enraged after a traffic encounter, followed Chuckie and confronted him. In an attempt to protect his father, Chuckie found himself in a life-threatening situation. His father, Charles P. Stipetich, described the harrowing moment when McSwiggen reached for something, prompting Chuckie's father to intervene. The confrontation ended with both Chuckie and McSwiggen wounded by gunfire.

Despite the chaos, Chuckie's final actions were those of a true protector. As he lay wounded, he handed his gun to his father, who then held McSwiggen at gunpoint until police arrived. Chuckie's mother, Deena Stipetich, poignantly expressed the family's grief and admiration for their fallen hero: "He wanted to change the world, and he is my hero because he sacrificed himself to save my husband's life."

The impact of Chuckie's death has resonated deeply within the Oakdale community and beyond. A blue wreath with a black ribbon now adorns the door of the Oakdale Borough police station, symbolizing the mourning of a brotherhood that has lost one of its own. Police Chief Jim Lauria, who has known the Stipetich family for years, expressed the profound loss felt by the community: "We're a brotherhood, first and foremost. So, when you lose someone, it's losing your child. In my case, I'm the chief, so they're my kids. I lose a child."

To honor Chuckie's memory and his service, a special knife has been designed bearing his name etched on each blade. This knife stands as a symbol of his strength, resilience, and the sharp precision with which he approached his duties. It serves as a tribute to the indelible mark he left on all who knew him and a reminder of his unwavering spirit.

Family, friends, and fellow officers gathered to celebrate Chuckie's life on July 8, 2022, at the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. The following day, a funeral service was held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where loved ones shared memories of a young man whose life was defined by service, love, and dedication. Although his burial was private, the legacy of Charles G. "Chuckie" Stipetich will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Chuckie, your sacrifice and devotion will never be forgotten. Your spirit lives on in the lives you've touched and in the knife that now stands as a symbol of your enduring legacy. Rest in peace, Marine. Semper Fi.
